Stewart Beach is the stronger default when the adults are already managing naps, snacks, sunscreen, bathroom timing and a wagon full of equipment. Visit Galveston explicitly describes it as a family beach and lists restrooms, showers, changing rooms, lifeguards, chair and umbrella rentals, concessions and beach supplies.

The alcohol prohibition does not make every visit quiet, but it removes one variable. That matters for parents who want the simplest answer rather than the biggest beach.

Stewart is the better choice when:

Why East works for families.

East Beach is not an anti-family choice. It offers restrooms, showers, lifeguards, rentals, food, beach supplies, picnic areas and free first-come beach wheelchairs. Its advantage is scale: a broad stretch of sand, major volleyball facilities and space designed to host gatherings and events.

The tradeoff is atmosphere. Alcohol is permitted, and an event or busy volleyball day can make the park feel more energetic than parents seeking the quietest possible setup may want. Check the event calendar before committing.

East is the better choice when:

Your crew includes older kids or adults who want volleyball and activity.
You are meeting another family or bringing a larger group.
Room to spread out matters more than the calmest atmosphere.
You want food and drink options at the East Beach Cantina.
You need accessible concrete parking close to the pavilion.
You are intentionally attending an event rather than avoiding one.

Beginning May 1, 2026, East and Stewart Beaches moved to automated pay-to-park between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m. year-round. Cameras scan the vehicle’s license plate when it enters and leaves. Payment instructions are posted on green signs and use the ParkMobile app or a QR code.

Avoid the expensive mistake

Confirm the correct plate number and complete payment before leaving. Official guidance says failure to pay can add a $30 collection fee to the parking charge, with possible additional late fees.

If your family routinely leaves for lunch or a nap and returns later, the single-entry rule belongs in the decision—not in the surprise.

Stewart Beach

The Park Board says Stewart’s parking lot is primarily sand. Mobi-Mats are offered seasonally, and a special-use area can provide drive-on access for qualifying disabled veterans, disability placards, fishing access and certain nonmotorized watercraft.

East Beach

East has concrete accessible parking near the pavilion, with ramp routes to restrooms, the Cantina, showers and changing rooms. Most of the remaining lot is sand.

Both parks list free beach wheelchairs on a first-come basis in exchange for holding a valid driver’s license. Availability is limited, so call or verify before building the entire day around one.
